Law School Students See Increase in Employment Rate

By Gregory Sirico

During the beginning of the pandemic, confusion for what the future would hold was level across all playing fields. Politicians, economists and students alike were all equally fearful that the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 could eerily mirror the Great Recession of 2009, an event that left the housing market in shambles, unemployment rates at all-time highs and law school graduates scrambling to find work in an industry that was only dishing out layoffs.

Despite growing speculation, these fears never fully came to fruition for law students who’ve recently graduated from ABA-accredited law schools. In a previous edition of the All Rise newsletter, we discussed the growing debt gap forming amongst recently graduated law school students as they struggle to secure employment in the early stages of the pandemic. According to recent data released by the Department of Labor, that gap is beginning to significantly close, with the employment rate for law school graduates seeking full-time work increasing from 70% in 2019 to 77% in late 2020.

“I have employers reaching out to me for candidates all the time,” stated Tanya Lundberg, the assistant Dean of Career Services at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, a program that experienced quite the opposite at the beginning of the pandemic. "I feel bad, I had to start telling them I don’t have any more candidates." Although COVID-19 remains, slowly but surely the field of law is showing signs of an apparent bounce back. Only time will tell if other major industries can follow suit and find their rhythm going into 2022.
